our last stop on the brazil trip was the city of recife. I expected rio to be the highlight and had little to no understanding of what to expect in recife (pronounced hey-seefay). recife turned out to be a highlight of the trip, including a leisurely day trip to porto de galinhas. we also toured a technology start-up incubator, porto digital and a cachaca factory called calvalheira.

after enjoying the beaches of rio, our group headed to salvador next. the rio airport was an experience in itself - not much english language was spoken or displayed, we could've easily missed our flight due to gate change communicated in portuguese language only! the sights continued to be beautiful in salvador, especially the beaches and igreja de nosso senhor do bonfim - the most famous catholic church in the state of bahia.

we kicked off our two week trip to brazil in rio de janeiro. highlights in this city included staying on copacabana, the sugarloaf excursion, plataforma (think a south american version of moulin rouge), drinking caipirinhas on the beach everyday, fresh buttered corn and pao de queijo from street vendors, eating lots of camarao (shrimp), and touring historical churches. while I didn't take the christ the redeemer tour, everyone says it's worth it if you have time.

last year, we took a family trip to maui. it was the most amazing trip and we did quite a bit of exploring which kept us busy with good quality time as a fam. not to mention, staying at the wailea beach villas was outstanding. in no particular order, here are my top 5 experiences in maui.
1. watch the sun rise above haleakala volcano and take a bike tour down the mountain through lavender and pineapple fields
2. eat at the original cheeseburger in paradise in lahaina
3. road trip to paia for cute local boutiques and restaurants
4. visit iao valley and check out the iao needle
5. go snorkeling on a clear day in wailea
aloha! you're on island time!
