brazilian caipirinha

in honor of my trip to brazil last year, I'm sharing a recipe for the famed caipirinha. the caipirinha is a combination of muddled lime, sugar, and cachaca served on the rocks. it's a great drink for a warm summer day or any day you find yourself dreaming of those beautiful brazilian beaches.

asian immersion: last stop! the philippines

last stop on the asia whirlwind tour! manila, philippines. highlights include filipino mango, pomelo and prawn salad at the greenbelt, shopping at rustan's, and staying at the peninsula.

asian immersion: kuala lumpur, malaysia

part three of my whirlwind asia trip was kuala lumpur, malaysia. I had a brief moment of panic as I exited the airport... malaysia does not issue customs documentations as all the other places I'd been did. usually, those customs declarations are required for exit of the country. my first twenty minutes in malaysia were spent freaking out about whether I'd be able to leave the country without this paperwork! good times.

when I first landed in malaysia, I noticed a large group of muslims praying in the airport at the gate without their shoes on. malaysia was my very first visit to a largely muslim-populated country, I soaked it all in quickly and probably stuck out like a sore thumb with my blonde hair and western apparel. the other majority of the malaysian population is chinese and it just so happened to be the indian festival of lights, deepavali, during my trip as well.

asian immersion: sunny in singapore

part two of my whirlwind asia trip was singapore! singapore was surprisingly western feeling with warm temperatures and lots of ex-pats. I met up with a friend at harry's bar, they were blasting southern tunes you would hear at home in the southern united states, I could not believe my ears. highlights include orchard road shopping, chatterbox chicken rice, marina bay sands, and dinner in dempsey hill.

asian immersion: hellooo hong kong

I was fortunate to travel through several countries in europe during undergraduate school and south america during graduate school... and was really dying to explore asia next. I was able to do just that via a two week whirlwind work trip to hong kong, singapore, philippines, and malaysia. highlights include pad thai, tea pots, and overall, a unique overview of asian culture.

pad thai is a favorite of mine, this version from the shangri-la kowloon did not disappoint

brazil part 3: recife

our last stop on the brazil trip was the city of recife. I expected rio to be the highlight and had little to no understanding of what to expect in recife (pronounced hey-seefay). recife turned out to be a highlight of the trip, including a leisurely day trip to porto de galinhas. we also toured a technology start-up incubator, porto digital and a cachaca factory called calvalheira.

brazil part 2: salvador

after enjoying the beaches of rio, our group headed to salvador next. the rio airport was an experience in itself - not much english language was spoken or displayed, we could've easily missed our flight due to gate change communicated in portuguese language only! the sights continued to be beautiful in salvador, especially the beaches and igreja de nosso senhor do bonfim - the most famous catholic church in the state of bahia.

brazil part 1: rio de janeiro

we kicked off our two week trip to brazil in rio de janeiro. highlights in this city included staying on copacabana, the sugarloaf excursion, plataforma (think a south american version of moulin rouge), drinking caipirinhas on the beach everyday, fresh buttered corn and pao de queijo from street vendors, eating lots of camarao (shrimp), and touring historical churches. while I didn't take the christ the redeemer tour, everyone says it's worth it if you have time.

top 5 maui experiences

last year, we took a family trip to maui. it was the most amazing trip and we did quite a bit of exploring which kept us busy with good quality time as a fam. not to mention, staying at the wailea beach villas was outstanding. in no particular order, here are my top 5 experiences in maui.

1. watch the sun rise above haleakala volcano and take a bike tour down the mountain through lavender and pineapple fields
2. eat at the original cheeseburger in paradise in lahaina
3. road trip to paia for cute local boutiques and restaurants
4. visit iao valley and check out the iao needle
5. go snorkeling on a clear day in wailea

aloha! you're on island time!
